We are a family business with a combined experience of 40 years in business insurance.
We are a community broker and feel that the micro/SME clients are generally not receiving the level of advice, consistency, and knowledge that the corporates receive when it comes to managing their risks and insurance. We want to stand out as the go to insurance and risk advisor to these business owners through a commitment to expertise and collaboration.
Sense Risk started in 2019, but the journey began in 2017. Emily, the founder, was working for an international insurance brokerage and requested the opportunity to work from home. Emily and Steve’s eldest child is a non-verbal autistic boy and was due to begin school. Emily wanted to be able to do the ‘school-run’ with him. His additional needs and susceptibility to meltdowns would be easier to manage if she were there to support him. Not only this, but she would also save two hours of wasted time on the daily commute.
Her request was declined due to the fear of setting a precedent. If it were agreed for Emily, it would have to be agreed for everyone. In the following 6 months, her son really struggled to adapt to his new surroundings and routine. This was the catalyst, as some 12 months later she decided to create a business that would advocate for the micro/SME business owner and create a culture of collaboration amongst its clients and staff. She felt there was a lot wrong with her profession; the unclarity in policy wordings, the lack of emphasis on qualified staff to advise micro/SME businesses, the old-fashioned cultures and lack of diversity and inclusion across her sector in senior roles. She wants to change all that, and in 2020 Steve joined the business to help see that dream come to fruition; to create a business of highly qualified and experienced risk and insurance advisors that want to challenge the status quo whilst creating a work culture that promotes better mental health, balance, diversity, and inclusion to the benefit of all.
Our values are shaped by our experiences and a desire to help the community of micro/SME businesses succeed with a commitment to the following:
A qualified and experienced advisor to micro/SME business owners. Expert advice should not be exclusive to corporate businesses.
Working with you to understand your risks, advising on the insurances you purchase and working with you and insurers to achieve cost effective and flexible covers.
Doing what’s right by you and building a long-standing relationship of trust.
Meet Our Team
Emily graduated from Bangor University, North Wales in 2003 and started her career soon afterwards with Zurich Insurance as a graduate trainee. She soon realised that she wanted to represent the client, not the insurer and started working for an independent broker in 2005. This business was bought out by larger businesses during the 13 years Emily spent with the company. She is passionate about improving the profession and believes there is a wealth of opportunity to do so. As such she gets involved in the professional bodies to do just that. She is currently working on the New Generation Programme for the Chartered Insurance Institute looking at ways the broking community can support clients to rebuild public trust in our sector.
She is also a passionate runner having completed marathons in London, Berlin, Newport, Taunton, Gloucester, and Bournemouth!
Steve went into insurance straight after A levels some 24 years ago. He worked his way up to Senior Regional Underwriter level having worked for several large insurance companies. In late 2018 he took a break from the sector and worked for one of our clients in the building trade. Steve also believes in the company vision – a business that promotes an ethical approach to clients and staff and wants to see better outcomes for micro/SME business owners to achieve success.
He is a passionate Bristol City supporter, having been a season ticket holder for 35 years.
